What is the FSRH eKA?

The eKA (electronic knowledge assessment) is an online single best answer test that must be passed before candidates can take our Diploma and Letter of Competence qualifications.

It supports you to deliver contraceptive and non-specialist sexual and reproductive healthcare and ensures you have the knowledge required. Taking the eKA enables you to move onto the clinical aspects of our qualifications above.

More than 80% of doctors and nurses pass the test first time. The test runs for 2 hours and must be completed in one sitting. It costs £75 per attempt. You will not be provided with feedback aside from whether you passed or not.

Please note that the duration of the eKA was extended by 15 minutes from 2 January 2019, based on user feedback. This will give you two hours to complete the assessment. For more details, read our news story.

Resources to Prepare for the eKA

It is important that you give yourself sufficient time to learn and prepare before you pay to take the eKA. Once you have paid for the eKA, you have 28 days to take it.

The following resources are available to help you prepare to take the eKA.

e-Learning (eSRH)

The e-Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare (eSRH) was developed by the FSRH in partnership with e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH). It is an online learning programme which will help to develop your knowledge and to prepare for the eKA. Access to e-SRH is free for NHS workers- there is a fee for non-NHS workers.

eSRH covers a wide range of SRH topics and includes a number of learning sessions (approx. 25 hours of learning). Throughout the 18 modules there are short quizzes and certificates of completionto help you assess your progress. You can see what is included in the e-SRH by viewing the curriculum.

Standards and Guidance

You are encouraged to review the FSRH Standards and Guidance and the UKMEC.

The RCGP’s Women’s Health Framework (which the FSRH developed in collaboration with the RCGP and RCOG) is free for RCGP members -it provides a portal of guidelines and documents related to women’s health.

You can also review BASHH guidelines.

Practice eKA

You are also encouraged to use the practice eKA area, which is designed to familiarise candidates with the layout of the eKA website, and how to navigate through the assessment. The practice consists of 2 mock questions and can be used as many times as you like.

What do I need to know before taking the eKA?

The eKA is 100 Single Best Answer questions, and runs for 2 hours. After this time the assessment will automatically end, even if you have not answered every question. Each question is worth 1 mark. There is no negative marking.

Although this is an open book assessment, we recommend that you work through as many of the questions as possible and use the reference guides to support those questions where you feel unsure of the answer.

Questions can be ‘flagged’ to return to later- we recommend using this tool for those questions you are unsure of.

Important things you need to know about the eKA

  • Once you have paid, or once your trust payment has been activated, you have 28 days to take the test.

  • You can navigate back and forward through the questions using the platform's navigation buttons. DO NOT use your browser's navigation buttons.

You should save this webpage as a PDF by clicking the 'print' button and selecting a PDF writer instead of a printer. Please note that we do not issue certificates for the eKA as it is not a qualification. Therefore you will not see the eKA under ‘My Certificates’ or 'My Qualifications' in MyFSRH.
