Updated FSRH Clinical Guideline: Intrauterine Contraception (March 2023)
Date: 03 Apr 2023
Type: FSRH Clinical Guidance and Clinical Statements

FSRH publishes its updated Clinical Guideline on intrauterine contraception. This guideline is also published as a supplement in the BMJ Sexual and Reproductive Health (BMJ SRH) Journal.
The guideline provides evidence-based recommendations and good practice points to enable clinicians to support individuals to make informed decisions about choosing and using IUC. It includes information on assessing suitability of IUC use for contraception, the risks and benefits of IUC and guidance for IUC procedures, complications and follow-up. It is intended for any healthcare professional or health service providing contraceptive care in the UK.
Access the updated guideline here.
FSRH members also have access to additional member-only resources, including:
- an Intrauterine Contraception (IUC) Quick Reference Summary which has been developed by the FSRH CEU to help busy clinicians give clear, accurate and safe advice on the IUC. This will go live at the webinar launch on 19th April 2023.
- answers to the CPD questions
- a version of the guideline in which supporting evidence for the recommendations has been removed from the main text and located in an appendix for ease of reading.
FSRH members have free access to the Intrauterine Contraception webinar held on Wednesday 19 April 2023. More information can be found on the FSRH events page.
