The guidance clarifies the way in which hospital specialists can refer patients straight to other specialists for treatment, rather than sending them back to their GP.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) has produced some guidance on Onward Referral by secondary care clinicians.

AoMRC states:
The guidance clarifies the way in which hospital specialists can refer patients straight to other specialists for treatment, rather than send them back to their GP for onward referral. Although the change to the contract between Clinical Commissioning Groups and trusts enabled this when it was introduced in 2016, there have been concerns that uptake of the changed procedure was not as consistent as many hoped and clinicians and managers had called for guidance on how the new arrangements should operate.
