Make your voices heard: call to members to submit to English and Welsh consultations on telemedicine abortion

FSRH is encouraging members with experience of administering early medical abortion services to submit independently to English and Welsh consultations to decide the future of telemedicine abortion care.

Telemedicine abortion up to 10 weeks’ gestation was legalised temporarily in March 2020, to allow women to access early medical abortion at home during the pandemic. The English and Welsh governments have since announced public consultations on the question of whether to make the change permanent. 

There is overwhelming evidence to suggest that telemedicine abortion has been safe and effective, and has been well received by women. Since the introduction of telemedicine care, waiting times and length of average gestation have both reduced significantly.

While the Faculty is submitting a formal response to both English and Welsh consultations, we encourage our members to submit a short individual response. We believe the voices of practitioners will have a pivotal role in the outcome of the consultation.
