The 2024 FSRH Nurse Spotlight Award Winner

Every year, the FSRH Nurse Spotlight campaign culminates in the recognition of an outstanding nurse who has made an exceptional contribution to sexual and reproductive healthcare. We are delighted to introduce this year's winner: Liz Thomas.

The judges commented: “Liz was the unanimous winner this year; her work was directed towards supporting vulnerable and often homeless women, working across an entire city, demonstrating an incredibly broad range of nursing skills, including providing supervision. Her skillset showcases the contribution the nursing profession makes to the FSRH Hatfield Visions 2030, and to the provision of high quality sexual and reproductive healthcare for everyone in society.”

“I am very proud that I am able to use my experience and skills to provide accessible, dignified and  effective women’s health care to some of the most marginalised women in  our city. This an intensely rewarding role and I’m very grateful for the support of nurse and GP colleagues, council and hostel staff, drug workers, staff and volunteers in our incredible homeless day centres in supporting the delivery of holistic homeless women’s health outreach. I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with some really inspirat ional nurses over the years and I hope that this award will similarly inspire other nurses to keep pushing the boundaries of contraception and sexual health nursing to strive for a world where all women have access to the high quality care we all deserve.”

"I was absolutely and totally heartened when reading Liz's nomination for this year's FSRH nurse spotlight award. Liz truly embodies the Hatfield Vision by actively innovating a collaborative approach to SRH services for vulnerable women. A real champion for real women. It was a privilege to appoint Liz for this year's Nurse Spotlight" - Polly Zipperlen, Sister - Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare

Highly commended by judges

Cathryn Redfern-Light was commended for her work in teenage outreach, her work as a Faculty registered trainer, and working in both primary and secondary care. Cathryn was highly commended by our judges and recognised for her incredible contribution.

“I am privileged to work with a diverse and rewarding group of young people facing unplanned  Cathryn pregnancy choices and see so many evolve into making wise sexual health decisions - often within a background of significant social disadvantage. I could not do this without being enabled to practice innovatively and autonomously by the supportive team at Unity Bristol and in particular my job share colleague. With a dual role as Specialist Nurse Practitioner I am able to make full use of my FSRH qualifications and FRT status providing care to those of all ages requiring contraception and sexual health input. I am both appreciative and taken aback to be nominated by equally worthy practitioners within my service who are all to be equally commended.”
