We're pleased to announce the winner of our 2022 Undergraduate Student Essay Prize.

About the prize

The prestigious prize, first launched in 2015 and inspired by family planning pioneer Dr Margaret Jackson, gives medical undergraduate students the chance to present in an essay their ideas on current and topical aspects of sexual and reproductive health (SRH). The prize aims to encourage the next generation of healthcare professionals to engage with new and contemporary ideas within the realms of SRH, while expanding our understanding of where it is going next.

The winning essay

James Pasint-Magyar has won this year with their essay entitled "The Contraceptive Options, Needs and Challenges for Transgender Men and Non-binary Individuals”. Our judging panel felt James provided clear perspective on a topic that was both relevant and important to the SRH community.

2022 Undergraduate Student Essay Prize winner James Pasint-Magyar

We spoke to James about their win, “Thank you so much to the FSRH for awarding me with this prize. I have been interested in sexual and reproductive healthcare since my first year of medical school and it is a huge honour to have been recognised for this essay. In the future I hope to continue to expand my knowledge in this incredibly dynamic area of medicine and hope to continue to advocate for inclusive healthcare. With increasing media attention now focusing on reproductive rights and healthcare it is more important than ever to ensure that we are as informed as possible.”

For their brilliant submission, James has won £150 and a complementary ticket to a half-day, online Hot Topic event in 2023.
