We are working with the RCOG on a three year programme to increase healthcare professionals' capacity to address barriers to safe abortion and/or post-abortion care for women and girls globally. Find out more below.

Unsafe abortions are one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide, with an estimated 25 million unsafe abortions being performed each year. However, abortion related deaths are largely preventable by providing access to contraception, safe abortion care, and timely post-abortion care.

Abortion is a key part of women’s healthcare. The RCOG and FSRH are committed to advocating for safe abortion care globally, for everyone who needs it.

What does the programme involve?

73 Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Champions have been recruited across five focus countries (Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Zimbabwe). The SRHR champions will advocate to bring down the barriers to safe abortion and/or post-abortion service provision.

How are we doing this?

As part of the programme we are:

  • Supporting the SRHR Champions with FSRH international affiliate membership. This gives them access to a range of learning resources, our BMJ SRH journal and international eSRH learning modules.

  • Access to our FSRH International Certificate of Knowledge, an online assessment covering a range of topics, including contraception, STIs and early pregnancy

  • Sharing our expertise in developing advocacy tools for the Champions to use

  • Contributing to best practice documents that Champions can use in their day-to-day work.

In partnership with RCOG, we have also produced four key messages on safe abortion globally. Read about this here.
