Type: All-Party Parliamentary Group on SRH

On 5 December 2023, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Sexual and Reproductive Health (APPG SRH) held a meeting - chaired by the APPG’s Co-Chair Baroness Liz Barker - focused on how a more integrated approach to service delivery could contribute towards a reduction in inequalities in reproductive health outcomes between different group of women.

The meeting forms part of the APPG’s current project on this issue and follows a series of interviews to gather insights from different voices across the sector. Over 20 Parliamentarians, officials and interviewees gathered to share their views on the policy changes that would help to reduce inequalities between women. The discussion was held in the context of plans to expand Women’s Health Hubs as set out in the Government’s Women’s Health Strategy.

The meeting included presentations from the following:

  • Simphiwe Sesane, Contraception and Sexual Health Nurse Consultant at MSI Reproductive Choices and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Advocate
  • Dr Ewa Craven, Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB Clinical Women Health Lead
  • Dame Lesley Regan, Women's Health Ambassador for England

Attendees discussed the SRH system being increasingly complex and difficult to navigate, with many women receiving disjoined care as a result. Other issues raised included the need to ensure effective link up between SRH and other parts of the system, such as domestic violence and housing support services, the importance of indicators related to inequalities being built into Hubs’ evaluation and measurement and the value of promoting co-commissioning within SRH.
