FSRH Position Statement on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Our beliefs

FSRH supports the World Health Organization’s definition of female genital mutilation (FGM), which states that any form of cutting or surgery to the genitalia that is done for cultural or non-medical reasons should be classed as FGM. We believe that FGM is a form of abuse, and a violation of girls’ and women’s fundamental human right to physical, sexual and reproductive health and wellbeing.

Our vision

We want a UK where healthcare professionals, schools, social services and community leaders and networks work together to sensitively but swiftly act upon early warning signs that girls and women may be at risk of FGM. Equally, we would like to see community leaders and networks engage with their local populations to increase awareness of the negative health consequences of FGM.
