The FSRH is delighted to offer this one-day postpartum contraception theory and practical training course covering a range of topics related to contraceptive planning after pregnancy.

This specialised course aims to provide RCOG Specialty Trainee doctors with the relevant knowledge and skills as required in their basic Specialty Training Curriculum (see CiP 11, KSs managing sexual wellbeing and managing the postnatal period) to enable support for postpartum and post pregnancy patients in making informed decisions about contraception.

The training will be delivered by experts in the field through a variety of interactive learning activities including presentations, case studies, demonstrations and practical procedure training. Delegates will be expected to actively participate and engage with the onsite course and independent learning that includes (but not restricted to) eSRH sessions and Contraception Choices e-learning and relevant FSRH guidance.

The knowledge and skills acquired in this course will also benefit those wishing to undertake the FSRH Letters of Competence.

Spaces on the course are limited to a maximum of 36 participants due to the interactive nature of the activities. Please do book early to ensure your place.

Course Trainers include:

Dr Charlotte Porter, Dr Michelle Cooper, Dr Katie Boog, Dr Catherine Shunmann and others.

Learning outcomes:

Delegates will be able to:

  • perform a post-pregnancy contraception choices consultation as aligned to the UKMEC.
  • perform a subdermal implant pre-insertion consultation.
  • demonstrate how to safely insert the subdermal implant on a model-arm.
  • discuss and assess suitability for use of intrauterine contraception (IUC) after pregnancy.
  • demonstrate knowledge of postpartum IUC insertion techniques and recommended follow-up after vaginal and caesarean birth.
  • perform postpartum IUC insertion on a model pelvis.
  • discuss and assess suitability for emergency contraception after pregnancy.
  • demonstrate knowledge of risks associated with short inter-pregnancy intervals and support informed choice.
