Vikki Crowe, our Education Development Manager, explains the background behind the relaunch of our SRH Essentials one-day course and the improvements we’ve made.

An exciting project I’ve been leading on in my role as Education Development Manager is the relaunch of SRH Essentials.

SRH Essentials is a short one-day course developed by the FSRH which launched in 2016, designed to give healthcare practitioners the skills and confidence to consult with patients about their sexual and reproductive healthcare needs.

A year after the original launch, in response to the feedback we received during this phase, we began a review project with the objective of improving and streamlining the teaching material.

Vikki Crowe #FSRH25 CelebratingMyself and Casimira Walker-Headley (Education Development Officer, FSRH) worked closely with the Essentials Working Group and with the CEU throughout the review process, ensuring the teaching materials were up to date based on clinical feedback. We also undertook an extensive redesign of delegate and facilitator supplementary materials, ensuring they were in line with Faculty branding, including diverse imagery representative of our audience.

Two years after the course was first introduced, it has now relaunched as ‘SRH Essentials for Primary Care’.

We’ve made improvements to a number of key areas, including:

  • Updated, relevant course content
The teaching materials have been extensively reviewed by clinical subject matter experts and with input from our FSRH Clinical Effectiveness Unit. This is to ensure ongoing quality assurance and accuracy.

  • Expanding our audiences
The course was initially aimed at practice nurses, but has now been expanded to primary care. This means doctors, nurses, and physicians associates are all eligible to take the course. We’re also looking at making this accessible for other audiences such as midwives and pharmacists -this is still in the pipeline, so watch this space.

  • Flexible teaching module
We’ve amended the teaching module to allow greater flexibility in the delivery of the course (but with the same learning objectives and high-quality). This means that our facilitators can deliver the course in a manner that best suits participants needs and teaching style. SRH Essentials can now be delivered over a single day or a couple of days, and the topics can be addressed in any order.

We’re excited about sharing the new and improved SRH Essentials with you! If you’d like to find out more, view our course information.

We would love to hear your feedback. If you have any comments to share, please contact us at edofficer2@fsrh.org.
