Assessments and Curriculum Committee

The Assessments and Curriculum Committee supports the Specialty Advisory Committee (SAC) in maintaining a high quality curriculum and effective assessment processes for the Community Sexual and Reproductive Health (CSRH) specialty training programme, with the aim of achieving FSRH’s vision “where quality sexual and reproductive healthcare is accessible to all”. The quality and diversity of the curriculum is achieved through quarterly reviews of the competencies within the ARCP matrix; reflective of trainee’s and clinician’s feedback.

Whilst the ACC’s main responsibility is to review and maintain the CSRH curriculum, the committee also ensures all appropriate changes and updates to ePortfolio (electronic collection of evidence for specialty trainees) are made.

The Assessments and Curriculum Committee’s Achievements in 2015 and plans for 2016

In 2015 the ACC participated in FSRH’s work on the shape of training and conscientious objection, identifying suitable collaborating specialties should the shape of training model be introduced. The committee also participated in the GMC’s consultation on accredited transferable competencies as well as the planning for the new Educational Strategy Board committee (ESB). Additionally, ACC have worked alongside the Exams committee in producing curriculum based examination questions for MFSRH part’s 1 & 2 and secured an ACC chairs seat on the RCOG curriculum committee.

This year the ACC will be working with the SAC and GMC to continue regular systematic reviews of the curriculum. As well as working with ESB and the Exams committees to ensure there is a coordinated approach to specialty training, including responding to changes in GMC and other statutory requirements. The committees other focuses will be to identify and confirm its module guardians and to develop appropriate WPBAs for area that trainees identify they need more specific tools. Finally, the committee will work alongside the RCOG curriculum committee on relevant joint projects, including patient feedback surveys and curriculum module revision.

Meet the Chair: Dr Catherine Schunmann

Bio: Dr Catherine Schunmann qualified from Manchester Medical School in 1992, gained MRCOG in 1999 and MFSRH in 2011. She was appointed as a consultant in Sexual & Reproductive Health in Norwich in 2011. Her interests include contraception provision around termination of pregnancy and intrauterine contraception.

Why did you join the Assessments and Curriculum Committee?
I was asked to consider joining the committee following involvement with other aspects of training such as ARCPs and shortlisting and interviewing for specialty training posts. Having acted as an Educational Supervisor and Training Programme Director, I am interested to develop my experience of the provision of postgraduate training whilst contributing to the work of the Faculty.

Although new to the role I have already received plenty of help and encouragement from more experienced Faculty members and fellows who are involved in Specialty training. I am looking forward to working in a capacity which is very different from a day to day clinical role and will broaden my professional horizons. In doing so I hope to be of service to CSRH trainees and the Faculty as a whole.
