Diplomate Assessment of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (DFSRH / NDFSRH)
The Diplomate Assessment of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH Diploma) is for doctors (DFSRH) and nurses (NDFSRH) who wish to demonstrate that they have attained the knowledge, attitude and skills required to deliver safe and effective sexual and reproductive health care in community, primary and secondary care settings. The FSRH Diploma is suitable for both doctors and nurses working in general practice, community and integrated sexual health services
The programme is open to doctors with both registration and a licence to practise with the UK GMC or nurses on the UK NMC register (excluding RN Level 2).

The theoretical knowledge in which the FSRH Diploma is based on the clinical guidelines published by the FSRH. The trainee can use a variety of learning methods to acquire the theoretical knowledge in sexual and reproductive healthcare. However the trainee must demonstrate this knowledge by passing and online knowledge assessment called the 'eKA in SRH' before commencing the 'Course of 5' and clinical assessment.
The FSRH also provides a free e-learning package (e-SRH) developed with the Department of Health´s e-Learning for Healthcare. This is not an essential requirement for the Diploma but is an optional resource to use in preparing for the eKA. Modules on topics covering areas such as contraception, sexual behaviour and STI testing and screening will be delivered in sessions taking about 20 minutes, and the entire course is estimated to take about 30 hours. The sessions are interactive, with animations, video clips and self-assessment questions. There are links to current guidelines and other resources.
Trainees will be encouraged to commence the FSRH Diploma at a suitable point in their clinical training, and will be expected to be able to perform basic procedures such as pelvic examination and basic life support / anaphylaxis care before they proceed to clinical assessments.
After passing the 'eKA in SRH', trainees will move on to the ´Course of 5´. This comprises 5 one hour sessions with fixed content, and includes nine FSRH Diploma assessments. The Course of 5 involves both training and assessment. It is important to note that failure of 3 or more assessments will constitute a failure of the Course of 5. Trainees who fail the Course of 5 will need to retake the entire Course of 5 at a later date. A Course of 5 may be run as a one day course, or as individual sessions. The course is delivered to groups of 4 trainees or less which will ensure there is opportunity to put theoretical knowledge into practice.
Trainees will thus be well prepared for their clinical experience and assessments, which may take place in a variety of locations including community clinics and general practice. They will be assessed in 7 topic areas covering the breadth of sexual and reproductive healthcare. Most assessments will be through direct observation of consultations, but there will be an opportunity for reflective discussion of consultations that have not necessarily been observed by the trainer.
The programme has been developed with an educationalist´s support. The course designers have consulted widely across the field of SRH including contributions from trainers, trainees, user representation, community SRH providers, general practice, gynaecology, and GUM.
